Sustainable forestry

Sustainable development ensures that the needs of present and future generations can be met.

According to common understanding, sustainable development means that it is ecologically, socially and economically sustainable. In terms of forestry:

- ecological sustainability means preserving typical forest habitats and their characteristics as well as safeguarding the conditions required by species living in the forest

- social sustainability means safeguarding the forest workers working conditions and capabilities, the cultural values of the forest, recreational and camping opportunities and the freedom to gather berries and mushrooms

- economic sustainability means that the production and processing of forest products is economically viable for all those involved in the production chain.

This description is consistent with the guidelines defined by the UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. Forestry practices, therefore, can maintain and enhance the ecological, cultural and recreational values of the forest, and ensure the viability of forest related livelihoods.
